What is “Anxiety” and When Should I Get Help?

My name is Dr. Mills and I am a psychiatrist in CA with my own private practice called Freedom Psychiatry, because Mental Health is FREEDOM! My practice focuses on achieving mental wellness using medication, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. I will be posting blogs/videos on a regular basis that answer common mental health questions.

Do you ever feel anxious? Maybe you worry a lot? We all talk about anxiety, but what exactly is “anxiety” and when should someone get help for it?

There are many different types of anxiety disorders, but today let’s focus on what is called Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

We all need a little bit of anxiety in our lives in order to stay healthy. For example, anxiety makes it so we finish our school and work assignments on time and that we have enough drive to stay safe in our environments.

However, sometimes anxiety levels are so high that we do not function well anymore. Sometimes, we worry so much about most things in our lives that it affects our work and/or family life. I think about Generalized Anxiety Disorder as an “excessive worry issue.”

The worry can be so bad that people will have:

  •    Irritability

  •    Fatigue

  •    Muscle tension, especially in the neck and shoulders

  •    Feeling of edginess

  •    Trouble concentrating

  •    Problems sleeping

The good news is, there is help for Generalized Anxiety Disorder! Treatment options include:

  •    Medications (I can help with that!)

  •    Healthy Eating (I can help with that!)

  •    Regular Exercise (I can help with that!)

  •    Talk therapy (I can refer you to a therapist)

The results of treatment are better when you use more than one of the above options together.

Thanks for listening and have a great week. Remember, Mental Health is FREEDOM!
