What is Depression?
My name is Dr. Mills and I am a psychiatrist in CA with my own private practice called Freedom Psychiatry, because Mental Health is FREEDOM! My practice focuses on achieving mental wellness using medication, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. I will be posting blogs/videos on a regular basis that answer common mental health questions.
Do you hear people talking about depression? People will say, “I’m depressed” and “I don’t have depression.” But, what is “clinical depression” anyway and when should someone get help?
Clinical depression, or having a formal diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, is more than feeling sad or a little down. Major Depressive Disorder is when someone feels very sad for at least 2 consecutive weeks and has some of the following symptoms that affect their daily functioning:
o Sleeping more or less than usual
o Little interest in fun activities
o Feeling guilty or worthless
o Low energy
o Problems concentrating
o Eating more or less than usual
o Moving slowly
o Thoughts of suicide or that you would be better off dead
If you are having thoughts of suicide, please contact 988 or 911 for immediate assistance as that is a psychiatric emergency.
The good news is, there is help for Major Depressive Disorder! Treatment options include:
o Medications (I can help with that!)
o Healthy Eating (I can help with that!)
o Regular Exercise (I can help with that!)
o Talk therapy (I can refer you to a therapist)
The results of treatment are better when you use more than one option together.
